About Lyngby Porcelæn

Lines to perfection

Porcelain factory Denmark – Lyngby Porcelæn

The porcelain factory in Denmark, Lyngby Porcelæn, was founded in 1936. The company was founded by the entrepreneurial wholesaler Holst & Knudsen, who first acquired Kjøbenhavn’s Porcellains Maleri in 1924 and then founded the factory to produce porcelain tableware, vases and other decorative art of high-quality craftsmanship. The factory closed in 1969, but managed to make a big impact on Danish design history.

Lyngby Porcelæn has always made a strong mark on the history of Danish porcelain, and always with an eye on current trends. For example, it used to be common for people to have two sets of tableware: one for everyday use and one for entertaining. Over time, however, this has changed with more and more people starting to use their smart, decorative tableware day to day.  At Lyngby Porcelæn, this is reflected in a perfectionist approach to the minimalist style that fits in with today’s modern design.

In 2012, the Lyngby Porcelæn brand resumed, and in 2016 the brand was acquired by Rosendahl Design Group. We are now relaunching these iconic designs, recreating them with the greatest care and respect for Lyngby's design legacy. We have combined classic craftsmanship with advanced production techniques to embrace a DNA and a design language that is unique but still fits into most homes.

Lyngby Porcelæn– handmade design since 1936

Porcelænsfabrikken Danmark – Lyngby Porcelæn was founded in Kongens Lyngby in Denmark in 1936 with the aim of producing porcelain tableware, vases and other decorative arts of high-quality craftsmanship.

Until the 1920s, ornamentation and decoration dominated designs. The focus was more on the decoration of the porcelain rather than the shape itself. But this changed over time, strongly influenced by the functionalist Bauhaus movement in Germany, and soon form and functionality became more important than the decoration itself.

A classic in Danish design history

With minimalist perfectionism, classic elegance and clean lines, Lyngby Porcelæn has always made a big impression in Danish design and porcelain crafts. And that’s also what makes Lyngby Porcelæn is still synonymous with modern and forward-looking craftsmanship at its finest.

Lyngby Porcelæn is the brand behind the development and reinterpretation of iconic designs, created with a fine sense of detail and great respect for the history that connects classic craftsmanship and modern advanced production techniques. All this is reflected in Lyngby Porcelæn’s DNA – a DNA that ensures our unique designs.

Lyngby Porcelæn is classic Danish design

Ever since its foundation in 1936, the Porcelain Factory Denmark – Lyngby Porcelæn has made its unequivocal mark on the history of Danish porcelain.

With its iconic green monogram at the bottom of the products, Lyngby Porcelæn remains a classic and timeless producer of Danish design.

Lyngby Porcelæn has strong historical roots and has been known for more than 80 years for its elegant and forward-looking Danish design and simple, stylish decorative handiccrafts. Driven by a passion for new ideas that can develop and improve everyday life, Lyngby Porcelæn is motivated by tradition and innovation.

We created the world’s first thermal cup in porcelain – and we were also the first to introduce tableware that could be taken straight from the oven and placed on the dining table. We create thoughtful, elegant designs for modern living. Each product has a simple, beautiful, timeless design.

Based on these traditions, Lyngby Porcelæn still represents refined Danish design – simple, stylish, sculptural. It’s about recognising a legacy – while setting the stage for the next stories to be told.

Next steps on the journey

Lyngby Porcelæn has for many years left a massive mark on Danish porcelain production and was added to Rosendahl Design Group’s brand portfolio in 2016.

Since then, we have launched a wide range of new products, including Rhombe tableware, which is designed with inspiration from an old service from the archives at Porcelænsfabrikken Danmark – Lyngby Porcelæn. We thus look back at history and traditions and reinterpret and renew old classics to fit into the present. This is something we will continue to do.

The iconic Lyngby vase

High-quality craftsmanship, timeless and modern shapes and stylish minimalist perfectionism are characteristics that are consistent in all our designs and products. And the classic Lyngby vase that most people associate with Lyngby Porcelæn is no exception. Even though the Lyngby vase is over 50 years old, demand for it is higher than ever. The white cylindrical vase with its distinctive grooves is a symbol of modern design in the Danish porcelain history.

Read here about how it is produced – and how it takes time, heart and soul to produce the unique quality that makes this vase stand out from all the rest.

How production is done

Many parts of the process are done by hand, giving each vase a unique story. To top it off, a green monogram is hand-applied at the bottom of each Lyngby Porcelæn product, indicating that the product is of high quality. The hand-printed monogram is also your guarantee that you are investing in a design icon that can be passed down from generation to generation.
