Kay Bojesen could create original stories in wood like no one else. He could bring wood to life. Or as he put it himself: 'The line must smile'. This is evident all the way through the series of Wooden Figurines, each one more iconic than the next. Just like this unique Tivoli guardsman in red and white colours, which, like all the famous Guardsmen, is inspired by one of Denmark’s national symbols from Amalienborg Palace Square. Kay Bojesen created the soldiers for the first time in 1940 in honour of King Christian X’s 70th birthday and as a tribute to the Danish king. The little Tivoli tambour-major, the leader of the Tambour Corps, has a height of 22.5 cm and is crafted from FSC®-certified beech wood. This special edition has been painted and printed by hand – naturally, with same great precision and care characteristic of all the classic Wooden Figurines from Kay Bojesen. The Tivoli tambour-major is the perfect gift for special occasions such as anniversaries, weddings, christenings and birthdays. The Tivoli Guardsmen are known for their majestic musical procession through Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen dressed in their striking red and white uniforms. The members of the world’s oldest youth guard are admitted from the age of 7 and undergo an elite musical education. In his own inimitable way, Kay Bojesen was able to create original stories in wood, first producing the large guardsman in 1940 and later the small guardsman in 1942, which this Tivoli guardsman was inspired by.

Kay Bojesen
Wooden figures
The series of wooden figures is based on Kay Bojesen’s basic idea that toys should be simple, solid and inspire play. Kay Bojesen also worked based on the philosophy that wood only comes to life when it gets a story – a philosophy that was consistent with all his figures. That foundation and Kay Bojesen’s unique talent has turned his magical world of Wooden FIgures into beloved classics and design icons that will last for decades to come.
Kay Bojesen is one of the big Danish designers. He was able to turn wood into original stories like no other. He had a knack for bringing the wood to life. Or as he put it: “Making the line smile”. And the lines certainly smile in each of the Wooden Animals – which have all become iconic.
